Herbs for Heartburn

While there are many herbs for heartburn relief, taking herbs for frequent heartburn symptoms that have not been evaluated by your doctor may not be the best treatment plan. If you suffer from heartburn occasionally, then you are not alone. According to a recent survey, 25% of people living in the United States suffer from heartburn every month and about 12% have symptoms every week. Frequent heartburn is defined by most practitioners as heartburn that is experienced three or more times per week. But, because symptoms are so bothersome, individuals that experience heartburn only several times more month may feel that there symptoms are frequent.

Using herbs for frequent heartburn may not be enough. Changes in lifestyle and dietary habits are usually necessary, even among people who are taking prescription medications that are designed to prevent heartburn symptoms. It can be very helpful to keep a food or heartburn diary for a month or two. This can help you determine many things. First, you will be able to see how many times per week you have heartburn symptoms. You may not realize how often you actually have heartburn.

Second, it may help you see what foods are heartburn triggers in your case and you may be able to avoid those foods. Eating foods that are highly acidic often leads to symptoms of heartburn. Herbs for heartburn relief, as well as over the counter medications attempt to neutralize or reduce the amount of stomach acid. If you begin taking over the counter products or herbs for frequent heartburn relief, your heartburn diary will help you determine what products work best for you. If you find it necessary to consult your physician, he or she will want to know what herbs for heartburn or other over the counter products you have tried. If nothing works, you will definitely want to consult your physician.

Your heartburn diary may also help you determine what other factors lead to heartburn in your case. Overeating, for instance, commonly leads to heartburn. Fennel tea or other herbs for heartburn relief may help after overeating. Taking a leisurely stroll is a better idea than lying down after a large meal. Other forms of exercise may bring on or worsen symptoms.

Some companies that sell herbs and other natural products have concoctions that include a combination of herbs for frequent heartburn prevention as well as heartburn relief. A combination of herbs for heartburn relief may be more effective than just one type of herb. Fennel and mint oils are commonly recommended, but some doctors advise that mint of any kind can bring on heartburn. Whenever you are buying herbs and other natural products, you should choose an established company that sells a number of different products, not just herbs for heartburn relief.

Six "Sexy Lips" Tips

Full, soft, inviting lips. Want them? We all do, and now we all can have them. Here?s the kiss and tell on luscious lips.

#1 Hands off. Let?s start simple, with a line you may have heard in your youth. Mom always told you and so will we ? stop biting and licking your lips. It smears your color and irritates your lips. Keep utensils and pens away from your lips. It?ll keep your pucker pretty and keep lipstick off your teeth.

#2 Hydrate yourself inside and out. Water, water, everywhere. Be sure to drink your share. You know you need to drink at least eight glasses of water a day. Here?s another reason to do it. Water is vital to tissue health.

#3 Protect your lips from wind and sun damage. Always wear lip balm with a SPF of 15 or higher. Always. And, don?t forget your lip balm. It moisturizes your lips and serves as a base for your lip color. Wear it in place of lip color on no make-up days. Worn under your lipstick, it?ll even help extend the life of your color.

#4 Lip liner can be a lifesaver. Lip liner serves two main purposes. It solves size and shape problems. It reins in your color. Thin lips? Following the lip line, outline your natural lip shape slightly beyond the edge of your lip. Thick lips? Lucky you. If you think they?re too thick (is there really such a thing?), try the opposite. Following your lip line, outline your natural lip shape just inside the edge of your lip.

Lining your lips helps keep your lip color from seeping out to the skin around your mouth. So, if your lipstick seems to migrate, then lip liner can keep it in place. One caveat to using lip liner: Your lip liner should not actually be visible once your lipstick is applied. So, choose your lip liner carefully. If the world sees an outline around your mouth, you?re using the wrong liner.

#5 Lip color sends a message. The color you choose says something about how you view yourself and how you want others to view you. What does your favorite lip color say?

Pale pink: pretty and sweet.
Red: chic or daring.
Coral: fiery and adventurous.
Brown tones: classic and timeless.

In fact, browns are a universally great choice. Every mouth can wear brown.

#6 Get glossy. Lip gloss is not just for teens. A little gloss worn on low-key days brightens up your face. Lip gloss applied over your daytime makeup transforms you into a party girl. Lip gloss dotted just in the center of your lips creates a pouty look.

Your lips are ready? are you? You?ve pampered, primed, lined and colored yourself all the way to a perfect pair of lips. So pucker up ?

Fake a Tan with Sunless Tanning Lotion

A great tan is associated with health and beauty. While a bronze look is desirable, especially in the summer or on holiday -- we all know the dangers of the sun's UV rays. Is a temporary tan worth the permanent sun damage, wrinkles, and skin cancer risk? Absolutely not!

You can save time and avoid these risks entirely with sunless tanning lotion. Today's self-tanners give you a deep golden tan, not the orange look of years ago.

Many new self tanning lotions are tinted and these are the ones I recommend. Not only do they give you an initial tan, you're more likely to apply the lotion evenly and avoid streaking.

First, take a shower or bath and exfoliate your skin. Pay special attention to your elbows, knees and any other rough spots. These areas will soak up the self tanning lotion and turn darker so you need to get rid of any dead skin.

Pat yourself dry and pin your hair up. Apply regular body or hand lotion to the dry spots you exfoliated. Allow yourself several minutes to completely dry.

You may choose to wear thin gloves to put on the self tanning lotion and avoid getting it on your hands, but applying it with your bare hands will probably result in a more even application. It's your choice.

Start applying the lotion from the bottom - up, bracing your foot on a chair or stool. Rub in lightly, you can always go back later and apply a second time.

Don't forget the areas that would tan naturally in the sun, the back of your legs, knees, arms, and neck. When applying to your face, remember to smooth it on your eyelids and into your hairline -- avoiding your eyes and hair. For people with sensitive skin, there are self tanning lotions formulated specifically for your face and will result in a more natural look.

If you will be wearing your hair up, don't forget to apply the self tanner on the back of your neck, and behind your ears to look more natural.

When you're finished, wash your hands thoroughly if you chose not to wear gloves, so your palms don't turn an unnatural color. Use a hand towel to dry them completely.

Before the lotion dries, it's more likely to tan what you're wearing too, so let yourself dry and put on some loose clothing. If you're going to be sitting on a cloth chair or couch, sit on a towel to avoid staining.

For a deep, dark tan before a special occasion, apply self tanning lotion before bed, and again in the morning. Before you go out, check yourself in the mirror for any streaks and correct them with a damp paper towel. Apply bronzing powder to your face and shoulders for a finishing touch, and hit the town!

Skin Care An Overview Of Treatments For Excess Perspiration

The main treatments of excess perspiration are - Use of antiperspirants, Botulinum toxin (Botox), Surgery, Iontophoresis, and Anticholinergic drugs. Let us look at them in more detail.

Antiperspirants- this is the first treatment to be tried for anybody with excessive perspiration. Antiperspirants are metal salts, mainly aluminum salts that are used to block the sweat glands and block the sweat from coming on the skin surface.

Botulinum toxin (Botox)- Botulinum toxin paralyzes muscles. That is why it is commonly used to treat wrinkles. Its injections also block the action of the nerves that activate sweat glands to produce sweat. The treatment may be painful for injecting the toxin in the palms or soles of feet, because multiple injections are given with a very fine needle near the sweat glands. If your doctor misses some glands, you will continue to sweat from there. Depending on your response, the injections may be repeated after about six months or more.

Surgery- In common surgical procedure, the sweat glands are removed. In some cases a surgery called Endoscopic Thoracic Sympathectomy is performed in which nerves are cut so that they cannot pass on the message to sweat glands. Surgery cannot stop sweat all over the body but only for certain parts such as armpits or hands. This kind of surgery is now done using endoscopes and is less painful compared to the surgery of earlier times. But with ETS, you may begin sweating more profusely from other parts of your body. This kind of surgery is not preferred by many surgeons and before any surgery you must talk about all possible results and side effects with your surgeon. Surgery is only resorted to if other treatments fail.

Iontophoresis- In this procedure a low current is passed on the affected area. This procedure is mainly used for palms and feet. This is a recommended procedure for hose that don't get much relief from antiperspirants. In Iontophoresis, patients sit with their palms or feet in shallow water through which a mild current is passed for between 20 to 40 minutes. This is repeated every alternate day for five to ten days till sweating is considerably reduced. After that a maintenance schedule is maintained. it is not known how Iontophoresis works, but it is thought that the water and electricity somehow thicken the skin and block the sweat pores. This procedure is not recommended for pregnant women or people with pacemakers or any metal implants in body.

Anticholinergic drugs- these drugs act by blocking the action of chemical messengers in the body that activate the sweat glands. As the action of these messengers is blocked, the sweat stops getting produced. These drugs may have other side effects such as loss of taste, constipation, blurred vision etc. You must speak to your doctor about all the side effects of these drugs.

Target Heart Rate and the Mature Exerciser

Anyone who has ever become involved in exercise, especially aerobic exercise, has probably heard the term target heart rate or target heart range or THR. This is a very important concept for anyone who is involved in an exercise program or someone who wants to start a program. Unfortunately, some exercise professionals gloss over this concept and don?t let people know just how important it is. My wife belongs to a Jazzercise group and she tells me that the instructors hardly bring up the need for monitoring your THR during an exercise session (my wife wears a heart rate monitor to keep checks on her THR all the time, so I guess I?ve had a positive influence on her in that respect). I sure am glad that I?m not the insurance company handling the liability insurance for this group. You see, not monitoring your THR can actually be dangerous. And, not only can it be dangerous for mature people, but it can also be dangerous for younger people too.

So, let?s look at the concept of THR and why it is so important. Under normal circumstances, the human heart can only beat so many beats per minute. If it goes above or below these certain parameters, it usually means that something is wrong, and that?s one of the reasons we need to know what it is. For the average person, a simple rule of thumb to determine your maximum heart rate (MHR) is to subtract your age from 220 (women can use 210). Example: a 60 year old male can calculate his MHR by taking 220 ? 60 = 160, so his MHR is 160. A 60 year old female would take 210 ? 60 = 150, so her MHR is 150. Keep in mind that this is just a rule of thumb. If you want to find out what your exact MHR is, you will need to have a doctor put you through an aerobic exercise test to exhaustion (a ?max test?), which isn?t usually worth while for most of us. When I was in graduate school they would put me through a ?max test? about once every other week to give the other students a chance to see how all the equipment worked and what they needed to do to run everything properly. They used me because I was a well conditioned triathlete and a little stupid too. Believe me, those tests are tough, and you don?t want to go through one unless you absolutely have to.

The reason you need to know your MHR is that it is used to determine your THR for different exercise goals. What do we mean when we say ?different exercise goals?? Some people are going to exercise just to stay or get healthy. Others will want to exercise to lose weight. And, still others may be exercising to increase their aerobic or anaerobic capabilities for a certain sport (swimming, sprinting, marathons, etc.). Whatever these goals are, the THR to achieve them is going to be different. If someone just wants to use aerobic exercise to help become or stay healthy, a good THR for them might be 65% ? 80% of their MHR. Using our 60 year old male whose MHR is 160, his THR for staying healthy would be 160 x 65% = 104, 160 x 80% = 128, so his range would be 104 ? 128 heart beats per minute (this is measured by taking your pulse). If he wants to lose weight, he might use a THR of 60% - 70% of his MHR because this level will burn more fat. And, don?t forget, monitoring your heart rate isn?t only to achieve your exercise goals. It is important that you keep track of your heart rate so that if anything unusual starts to happen while you?re exercising you will be able to stop.

A really convenient way to keep track of your target heart rate is with a heart rate monitor. These can cost anywhere from about $60 up to $250 and more depending on how many bells and whistles you want. You can also just take your pulse at your wrist or neck (how to do that is food for another article), several times during an exercise session to make sure you stay within your range.

Knowing your THR and MHR is very important, both for safety and for appropriate exercise goal setting. Learn what they are, and monitor them regularly.

Mercury Toxicity: A Spectrum of Signs & Symptoms

Mercury, the only liquid metal at room temperature, has long been known for its dual nature. While elemental mercury found use in medical therapy, mercury toxicity has also been appreciated from the Middle-Ages. Mercury toxicity results when this heavy metal interferes with critical cellular enzymes and functional proteins. All three forms of mercury, elemental, inorganic and organic, have unique patterns of toxicity.

Elemental mercury, used in traditional remedies, dental amalgam, barometers, thermometers and photography, can cause toxicity when absorbed as vapors through the lung. Even a small accidental spill of elemental mercury can result in acute toxicity. Effects of elemental mercury toxicity are mainly seen in the lung and the brain. The airways and alveoli of the lung become irritated, leading to bronchitis and pneumonia. In severe cases respiratory failure presents with cough, breathlessness and low oxygen levels in blood. Involvement of the central nervous system in mercury toxicity causes convulsions and headache. Ingestion of elemental mercury does not cause mercury toxicity as long as the intestinal mucosa is normal. However, people with gut problems like gastrointestinal disorders like diverticulosis and fistula may be at risk of mercury toxicity after ingestion.

Besides the tremors, irritation of the oral cavity, excessive salivation and sweating, chronic elemental mercury toxicity causes some unique symptoms labeled as erethism. It includes extreme shyness, emotional instability, nervousness, insomnia, memory problems, and an inability to concentrate. Signs of chronic toxicity may even mimic Parkinson?s disease with the characteristic shuffling gait and hand tremors.

Inorganic mercury (e.g. mercuric dichloride) is very toxic and may even be fatal on ingestion. It presents with vomiting of blood (hematemesis), abdominal pain and kidney failure. Death usually occurs due to shock and cardiovascular collapse. Chronic inorganic mercury toxicity, often seen in the hatting and furring industry, are similar to those of elemental mercury and include erethism. Lewis Carroll's mad hatter in Alice in Wonderland seems to have been inspired by the symptoms of erethism. The mad hatter presumably suffered from chronic mercury toxicity due to the now abandoned process of carroting felt in hat manufacture.

Long-chain organic mercury causes toxicity similar to that seen in contamination with chronic inorganic mercury. Short-chain inorganic mercury compounds are readily absorbed on ingestion and affect the central nervous system. Erethism, gait disturbance (ataxia), uncoordinated speech, a narrow visual field, and abnormal sensations (paresthesias) in the limbs result from organic mercury activity.

These short-chain organic compounds, like methyl mercury, readily cross the placenta to inhibit brain development in the fetus. Congenital organic mercury poisoning was perhaps most poignantly illustrated by the severe outbreak in Minamata, Japan, in the1950s. Various congenital defects including microcephaly (small brain), mental retardation, blindness, motor defects, and difficulty in swallowing result from congenital organic mercury poisoning.

During the 1930s and 1940s, 500 children died in the UK due to the Pink disease, which is caused by mercury containing calomel teething powder. Pink disease is characterized by pink, swollen painful limbs with a peeling skin. Other associated symptoms include fear of light (photophobia), low muscle tone, insomnia, and apathy alternating with irritability. Nowadays, Pink disease is occasionally reported due to absorption of mercury from diapers contaminated with phenyl mercury. It is not known whether pink disease reflects mercury toxicity or a hypersensitivity reaction to it. Mercury Toxicity is diagnosed by testing blood, scalp hair and 24-hour urine samples for mercury levels. Mercury levels in hair and urine are raised in both acute and chronic exposure whereas blood levels only reflect recent toxicity. However, some forms of mercury poisoning may not show up in the urine.

The Minimata exposure was estimated on the basis of 16 blood and hair samples, while urine excretion was minimal. Therefore, scalp hair testing may be a good way to test for chronic mercury toxicity, subject to the reliability of the commercial kit used. Mercury levels in scalp hair above 20 ppm may result in nerve system damage. Pubic hair or nails testing may not be as sensitive to mercury exposure as scalp hair. Oral chelation therapy, along with decontamination, forms the corner stone of medical treatment of mercury toxicity.
