Aging is All About Self Esteem

Many of you probably think that aging is something that is just part of the normal life cycle. If your concept of the life cycle is then something like you're born, you age and then you die then it's not surprizing that this is where you are headed. Although you are likely not alone in believing this I would like to challenge you to take a step back from this belief for a moment.

What I'd like you to try now is to repeat the statement to yourself again once, and as you do try not to listen to the words. Instead listen to how the words make you feel inside. I know that this may sound strange or feel a bit callenging but try it anyway. Alternately you can allow someone else to read it to you as you focus on and listen to the feelings it evokes within you.

So again the statement is:

(A) You're born, you age and then you die.

Now if you are a sensitive individual I can guess that the feelings that emerged with hearing such a statement were not exactly pleasant. For instance did you feel any of the following: saddness, heaviness, frustration, anger, hopelessness, helplessness, a sinking feeling, feeling limited or trapped?

If so, what do you think these feelings are trying to communicate to you about statement(A)? Well, if you consider this long enough, you'll probably agree that these feelings are suggesting to you that that statement is not good for you i.e. it is toxic to you. Just think about it.

When you eat something that isn't good for your body how does it react? Not well, right? That reaction is your body telling you that's not good for you! In the same way the feelings you may have had about statement (A) are telling you the same thing about the statement itself.

So you see, your body reacts not only to foods, it also reacts to beliefs that happen to be inside you that are not good for you. A belief is simply a statement that you choose to keep inside of yourself because you think it is going to be useful to you in some way. I'm only guessing that all this may be a new revelation for you. If not, I congratulate you on your wisdom.

Now when you eat something that isn't good for you, what do you do? Well, you make sure that that food never finds its way back inside you, don't you? So my next question is: Why have you persisted in keeping statement (A) inside you if it makes you feel so bad? In other words why do you believe statement (A) is useful to you?

Well you might now say something like, It's not a question of whether it's good for me or not, it's just a fact, I can't change it. Well this last statement is another belief, isn't it? How does it make you feel? Probably the same way statement (A) made you feel, correct?

So are you beginning to see how many toxic beliefs you have inside you? By toxic, I mean something that makes you feel uncomfortable, uneasy, sick, sad etc.. It's no wonder you're body is deteriorating i.e. aging. After all isn't aging what happens to you when you take something toxic inside yourself and it stays there for a long period and undermines the normal functioning of your body so that it breaks down?

Now that you've followed me so far I want to add that the choice to take something toxic into ones' self is an issue of Self Esteem! That is, if you like yourself sufficiently, you are unlikely to choose to take into yourself something that is toxic to you, correct? Whether it's bad food, cigarettes, toxic chemicals, drugs or beliefs, the effects are the same.

You may even be surprized if I said to you that the latter are probably more toxic than all the others.

If everyone gets free health care what is the incentive to live a healthy life, eat right and work out every day? Why bother? After all if there is free health care for everyone why not just wait to you have a medical problem and then go get fixed, why bother to work out? Bach Flower Remedies

I have to thank my son?s bump on the head for some of my conviction about the benefit of Bach flower remedies. Jon was about a year old and had hit his head quite badly. The bump was swelling before my eyes, and I decided to try out the Bach rescue cream that I?d recently purchased. The bump was partly in his hair and partly on his forehead. I carefully put the cream on ? it was difficult to get the cream close to the skin where his hair was. The next day the bruise on his forehead had gone completely, but the bruise in his hair was still there, although it was not as bad as I had expected it to be. This amazed me and made me determined to learn about these amazing remedies.

I bought and studied the little booklet that explained all about them - as a very busy mum I was happy to have something that wasn?t too big to read! I was also happy that the remedies weren?t drugs and could be used safely with even tiny babies. There are 38 different flower remedies for various psychological states, and I instantly could see how I could use them for myself, my family and my friends: larch is for someone who lacks self confidence, aspen is for generalised fears, impatiens for impatience, heather for those who want to be the centre of attention all the time, and scleranthus for the undecided.

The remedies were developed by Dr Edward Bach -pronounced ?Batch? - who lived in England from 1886-1936. He was trained as a doctor and worked as a pathologist and bacteriologist, but he felt that medicine was not getting to the root of the problem. He learnt about homeopathy, and developed various important homeopathic remedies, but he was still not satisfied, and this led him to develop the Bach flower remedies.

The remedies are based on flowering plants and trees, and are designed to correct inappropriate psychological states. This doesn?t mean that they?re not suitable for physical problems, because Bach believed that there was ?a factor above the physical plane which in the ordinary course of life protects or renders susceptible any particular individual with regard to disease, of whatever nature it may be.? From Heal Thyself by Edward Bach. In other words, if you are dissatisfied or distressed, you are more likely to catch a cold or become chronically ill.

Bach found the remedies through intuition: sometimes he would hold a flower in his hand and experience in his body and mind what the remedy was capable of, and sometimes he experienced deep negative emotions and would go out into the countryside searching until he found the flower that would turn off these feelings. Bach also found that if he floated the flowers in a glass bowl containing spring water in the sunshine, this healing property of the flower passed into the water. For some plants that flowered early in the year, such as holly, Bach boiled the flowers and stems to overcome the problem of the lack of sunshine.

The remedies are normally taken in one of two ways:

  • Putting two drops of the chosen remedy in a glass of water and sipping it frequently

  • Putting two drops of several remedies in a bottle with water and/or brandy and taking 4 drops 4 times a day

There is one combination that Dr Bach found he used a lot, and he called this ?rescue remedy?. This is a mixture of 5 of the 38 flower remedies (cherry plum, clematis, impatiens, rock rose and star of Bethlehem). It can be used for any emergency or stressful event. This is really helpful after a fall, or an argument, before visiting the dentist or taking an examination. The normal way of taking it is to put 4 drops in a glass of water and then to take small, frequent sips. You can also take it straight from the bottle in a real emergency. Many nurses I meet swear by it, and secretly and unofficially recommend it to their patients.

Rescue cream contains the same 5 remedies as the rescue remedy drops, but with the addition of crab apple and is useful for cuts and bruises, and for babies who fall and bang their heads!

The remedies are made using brandy, and this may be a problem for some people. An alternative way to take them is by dabbing them on the wrist, behind the ears and at the temples ? this way the benefit of the remedies may be felt without imbibing alcohol.

The remedies do not interfere with any drugs, and can be taken with good effect by the terminally ill. Babies and pets seem to benefit often apparently instantly and miraculously, and many adults can tell you of amazing results for themselves and their children.

Purification That Sweetens Life's Experiences

Purification is not a word I invented. It has been in the dictionary for a long time. However, when I used it for first time many years ago to refer to a client?s condition which he called ?sickness,? it did seem as if I had made a new discovery. This man suddenly had a different and more empowering perspective of what was happening. He was willing to be purified, yet seconds before he viewed his condition as sickness, vacillating between resisting it and trying to mask it.

Purification by Another Name Can be Sweet, or Not

Purification is not always sweet. It is primarily after the purification process that you experience the sweetness or clarity or freedom. The naming of a thing can make all the difference in the way you relate to it. Here are some names that are often applied to the process of purification:

Detoxification; Detox; Retracing; Illness; Sickness; flu, cold, headache; Healing Crisis; Correcting Crisis; Health Correction; Paradigm Shift; Recycling Toxicity; Release; Cleansing; Cleansing Response; Chronic/Acute Condition; -itis; Recoiling; Pattern Breaking; Falling Apart; Breakdown; Breakthrough. And perhaps you have others you could add to the list.

Levels of Experience

So often I speak and write about four levels of experience: physical, emotional, mental, and spiritual. Of course, these are not mutually exclusive categories. While your attention may be on one dimension, all the other levels are somehow involved in each experience, even if you are not aware. I do find that when distinguishing these four levels (or layers or bodies or parts or aspects), they are easier to sort out, and therefore, they are easier to clear out. Integration follows differentiation. Ultimately, you want to be in touch with the whole; familiarity with the parts enhances familiarity with the whole.

Through my ability to read information in the energy field, I know that the density of these levels becomes finer when proceeding from one to another in the order listed. That is, the physical level is the most dense (for example, you can see, touch, hear it), the emotional level is less dense, the mental level is an even finer vibration, and the spiritual level is the finest and lightest of all four. I have trained myself to see, touch, and hear in the emotional, mental, and spiritual levels and consider this as natural as accessing the physical level in these ways.

A Day for a Year

A client of mine, Sue, embarked on a personal purification process several years ago when she committed herself to a 49-day juice fast, supervised by a health care practitioner and me. Her intention was to clear anything from her body that she did not need. She thought of it primarily as a physical cleansing, but also experienced powerful healing in other ways. The emotional release often took her by surprise. In addition, she was constantly aware of how her mental body was working. And she experienced herself as more spiritually attuned.

It was a delight to check her energy field each day and notice the changes. In addition to the fasting from solid foods, she reflected and wrote about a year of her life, counting backwards. So, the first day, she released anything that may have accumulated during the current year; the second day, she released anything that may have accumulated during the previous year when she was forty-eight, and so on. The forty-ninth day coincided with the year of her birth. Throughout the 49 days, she carried on a full day?s work, usually six days a week.

A Recent Personal Purification

A few months ago, I unexpectedly engaged in a purification process. This began at a three-day conference in an extremely toxic environment: a hotel conference center during the day and hotel sleeping room at night. The conference was sandwiched between two airplane flights. I am not accustomed to being without fresh air for more than an hour or so at a time. As my body started to release the toxic overload, I began to feel ?sick.? My head ached, my joints stiffened, and I felt listless. My body was reacting to the toxins; more precisely, my immune system was working properly to release the toxins.

Just as my clients find it helpful when I re-frame their disempowering situations, I immediately re-framed my situation by converting the thoughts of ?sickness/illness? to acknowledge that my body was strong enough to eject toxicity. Truly, when the body is healthy enough, it does release toxins. Most of these symptoms are mildly to very uncomfortable; however, when you understand the process, you are more likely to cooperate than resist.

Without this understanding, you are likely to reach for some substance to repress the symptoms so that you do not have to feel uncomfortable. I grew up with parents who did not want their children to experience such discomforts. We were given many over-the-counter remedies and prescribed drugs. I equate this to removing the batteries in the smoke detector because you find the sound annoying when the detector works properly and gives its warning. I have not taken any drug (prescribed or over-the-counter) for many years.

True for Me; True for Others?

I often experiment with healing processes for myself because I have been challenged by some health conditions over the years. In addition, processes pop into my mind and flow from my lips or finger tips for clients and others. Sometimes my personal experiences serve as great barometer for others' experiences; other times they do not.

Of course, when I report my own personal experience, I am reporting just that: one person?s experience. As valid and helpful as that may be, it is not appropriate to generalize one person?s experiences to everyone?s experiences. I am fortunate to have information from so many others to help me to make generalizations and see patterns: clients, workshop participants, web site visitors, subscribers, and thousands who benefit from my services on the Internet. All those connections serve to reinforce that each one of us is unique.

Purification as Week One

The principles of purification I have discovered when working with myself and clients have served as a solid foundation for the first week of the DailyAffirm Process. The first week of each calendar month is devoted to purification ? called ?Releasing/Cleansing.?

About purification, I have learned that ?a little goes a long way? and often ?less is better.? These are, of course, cliches, but they connote important dynamics. I have found that those who benefit most from the DailyAffirm messages are the ones who know how deeply to work with each message. As with any discipline, you need to know when to be unrelenting in following a practice and when to be gentle with yourself. I suggest you not construct a lot of rules (e.g., ?I must do this every day for twenty minutes.?), which further limits you. Since the purpose of purification is to release limitations, it is wise to avoid adding new limitations.

The Bottom Line for Purification

The true test for knowing the success of a purification program is to experience greater clarity or health or freedom when it is complete. You can call the program by any label that seems appropriate ? from a cold to a healing crisis or an illness or a rose ? but the results at the end must make you feel more pure and vibrant, otherwise it is not a purification program.

We all encounter those hosts and hostesses who feel it is their duty to make us eat whatever their specialty is and generate a sense of guilt if we do not flatter their creation by stuffing ourselves with it, regardless of our weight control plans and weight loss goals. Gluten Intolerance is the body's 'allergic' response to gluten. Gluten is the sticky substance that makes flour bind. Gluten is in everything that contains wheat, rye, oats and barley....which is just about what every American downs on a daily basis.

GI is different than Celiac Disease. Celiac Disease is a chronic digestive disorder found in individuals who experience a detrimental immune response when they ingest gluten. The difference is that not everyone who is a Celiac is also Gluten Intolerant, because GI covers a broader range of food. Sometimes foods are 'wheat free' but not necessarily 'gluten-free.' Celiac is a lifelong condition and GI is something that is believed to be able to reverse itself.

The truth is that almost all Americans from Anglo-Saxon decent have some kind of sensitivity to gluten, mainly because of a genetic weakness passed on through generations. A European food staple is bread or 'wheat', unlike (for example) the Chinese and their rice. Eventually it will affect all races in certain geographical areas where eating wheat is a main staple.

Usually symptoms don't occur until someone is in their 20's, getting progressively worse with age unless diagnosed. The cure is to stop eating wheat and all products containing gluten. This is a hard one, but once diagnosed or once someone decides to get off gluten (and really everyone of Anglo-Saxon descent should probably do this) it is easy to steer clear of hurtful foods.

Many people these days are limiting their intake of gluten even if they aren't sensitive to it because it is a much healthier diet for the body. Your body will thank you. Depending on how much flour-containing products you do eat, you will lose anywhere from a little weight to a lot of weight! Not because you are doing 'low carb' but because flour products usually contain empty carbs and they just add weight to any normal person.

To substitute, gluten-free people eat potatoes, rice, rice crackers, rice-corn-quiona-pastas, more vegetable and fruits. Overall it is a much better diet for any body for it provides good energy throughout the day.

The first symptoms of GI or Celiac Disease is usually being sick a lot. Maybe you were healthy as a child, but find yourself getting tired easily and sick as you get older. GI causes the body to become vitamin and mineral deficient because the gluten wipes out good bacteria that help absorb nutrients...basically you become malnourished. I was sick for years, going to many doctors, trying to find out why I was so sick all the time. I was diagnosed with Chronic Fatigue...a generic diagnosis for people who are chronically sick. It was like having the flu everyday, but it only progressed to this stage after it had been years since the actual genetic predisposition to gluten kicked in. It is believed that major stress usually triggers the gene to become active. I was in a car accident and became very sick for years afterwards.

Someone who is 30 something or 40 something, who never had symptoms of GI, may all of a sudden start getting sick often. Maybe you might be getting sluggish after breakfast or lunch and that is a real tell-tell sign because at these meals it is common for people to eat sandwiches or flour-type products.

The only real way of knowing you are GI is by getting part of your intestine removed and tested by a gastrointerologist. Nobody wants to have this done, so I suggest everyone do a two week test. Stop eating gluten totally for two weeks and see what happens. Sometimes if you are very sensitive to gluten, you will notice an immediate difference! Sometimes it takes a couple of weeks to get some of that gluten out of the intestines to let the body heal..then you will notice a difference. If you want to know for sure. Another great way to tell if you have GI is to go to a kinesiologist and find out what your body is actually sensitive or allergic to. I opted for this because one of the first doctors I went to when I was sick WAS a gastrointerologist and he had no answers for me and he completely 'missed the boat.'

Kinesiology is the study of how the body reacts to different chemicals and stresses. You can find out a lot about your body and what it is missing or what it can't handle by seeing one. This literally can save your life by treating your problems on the spot and providing you with knowledge about yourself that will prevent future illness and disease. After all, almost every disease is caused by some kind of deficiency in the human body.

Kinesiologists are like doctors.....some are truly gifted and some aren't as bright as others . So, if you want to do this, make sure you see a very well respected one. These guys are few and far between and once you see one, you will realize why this is so. Most people could never do what these guys do. It takes patience and brains.

In intrathecal drug delivery, the surgeon makes a pocket under the skin that can hold a medicine pump. A catheter, inserted by the surgeon, carries pain medicine from the pump to the intrathecal space around the spinal cord. In spinal cord stimulation, low-level electrical signals are transmitted to the spinal cord or to specific nerves, blocking the passage of pain signals. TENS (Transcutaneous Electrical Nerve Stimulation) therapy uses electrical stimulation to reduce pain. Psychological treatment uses safe, non-drug methods that treat your pain directly by reducing high levels of physiological stress.

Macular Degeneration Protect Your Vision

Macular degeneration is the leading cause of blindness in the age 65 and over group in both the United States and the United Kingdom. One in six Americans between the ages of 55 and 64 will be affected which increases to one in four between the ages of 64 and 74. Over the age of 75 one in three will be affected. What is macular degeneration

Can You Avoid LASIK Problems With Screening And Tests?

The complexity of the LASIK surgery procedure is often obscured by the office-like milieu of the surgery room, the fact that it takes only a scant few minutes to accomplish the procedure, and the fact that the patient experiences virtually no pain. But, LASIK is in fact a complex surgical procedure with associated complications and risks, and it is certainly not apt for everyone. In order to determine your suitability, and to avoid potential LASIK complications, the best way is to get screened and tested prior to undergoing surgery.

Before the surgery, the patient?s corneal surface is examined with a computer-controlled scanning device. A topographic map of the cornea is created to determine irregularities in the shape of the cornea and also help detect astigmatism. Such preoperative examination is crucial in determining whether the patient is a viable LASIK candidate or not. Comprehensive testing and screening is helpful in avoiding LASIK problems at a later stage, since an inappropriate subject can be ruled out at the outset.

Laser eye surgery has its inherent limits as to how much vision correction it can accomplish. Patients with gravely poor eyesight are not apt for LASIK surgery. "So What Brings You Into The Office Today?" How To Get The Most Out Of Your Doctor's Visit

We have all done it before - after a few days of being sick (and perhaps a bunch of procrastinating), we finally make the call to the doctor, and end up in their waiting room. After what can sometimes seem like an indeterminate wait, we finally make it in to see the physician, and then, the question and the moment that we have all been waiting for - "So, what brings you into the office today?"

While this certainly seems like a fairly simple question, as a matter of fact, it is not at all, and how you answer it can determine to a large degree just how satisfied you are with this visit to the physician, and whether or not you receive the appropriate diagnostic tests and treatments.

One of the most important points to consider in this regard is that most physicians will have a tendency to interrupt you early on into your answer. I'm sure we have all experienced this, and studies have shown that physicians will commonly interject within a matter of seconds. The reason for this is that as physicians we attempt to pick out, what are to us, the really "relevant" parts of your answer (for instance, "when did your chest pain start," and "what makes it better or worse?"), and we often have a very hard time listening to those other parts ("Well, it all started at my cousin Millie's house. She was having a party, and my sisters were there, and it was really raining hard, but the potato salad was delicious..."), that while they might be a part of normal, everyday, social discourse, are not so relevant to what exactly is ailing you.

Part of this is due to some of the modern-day realities of practicing medicine. Physicians commonly only have a very brief amount of time with each patient (sometimes 10-12 minutes), and at the end of what is often a very long day indeed, they still have paperwork to do, and reading to catch up on. In short, they are busy. And if they only have 12 minutes with a patient, they want that 12 minutes used as valuably as possible, discussing relevant symptoms, diagnostics, and treatments (and not cousin Millie's potato salad...).

That being said, another point is that in 12 minutes a physician can realistically only deal with one (or at most, a few) physical complaints or issues, even though a patient may have far more than 1 or 2 complaints (those with chronic health problems can often have far more than this during any one visit). Because of this, physicians will often further redirect or interrupt a patient's answer to the above question, to focus on one major issue (what, in medical terms, is called the "chief complaint", that is, why you really finally mustered up the gusto to make it into the doctor's office), and maybe a second or third if time allows (during a routine "checkup" or "physical" exam, there is often a little more time built into the visit to handle these other issues). So if that chief complaint is chest pain, and you also have a persistent case of toenail fungus or dandruff, your physician is most definitely going to focus on that first, and most concerning, issue. If you mention these other complaints, the doctor will likely interrupt and redirect you again.

Because of these challenges and limitations, many patients end up leaving their doctor's offices unsatisfied. Either they're frustrated because they feel like they didn't get to tell their complete "story" about their illness (which, if doctors listened, often includes valuable information that can be otherwise missed), or they didn't get to have all of their complaints satisfactorily addressed or questions answered.

This does not mean, however, that visits to the doctor have to end this way. In fact, there are a number of steps that anyone can take, that can help to maximize the results of any visit to any physician. If you follow these simple steps that I've outlined below, with a little forethought and preparation, you can avoid much of the dissatisfaction that comes as a result of these limitations.

1) Ask yourself, what is the main reason that I've scheduled this visit? Is it for a sore throat, or shortness of breath, or persistent gas? The answer to this is your chief complaint; write it down.

2) Be aware that your physician is going to want to know a great deal about this chief complaint, in order to evaluate it and to provide you with the appropriate diagnostic procedures and treatment. There are certain questions that are commonly asked about most health problems. You'll do yourself a great favor, if in advance, you ask yourself and answer these questions (and write them down too!), so that when you're in the doctor's office, you can maximize the use of the time that is available. These commonly include:

- What are your symptoms exactly? Describe them in detail.

- When and how did they start? Does anything make them better or worse?

- If it's pain, what is its "character" - is it "sharp", "dull", "stabbing", "aching", etc.?

- Have you ever had anything like this before, and is it getting better or worse?

3) Besides this chief complaint, if time allows, you might be able to discuss additional complaints. These will most often follow a similar sort of analysis, so ask and answer the same questions as listed above of these additional symptoms or health problems. Then, during your doctor's visit, state explicitly that you have multiple complaints, but these other ones are secondary, and you are wondering if time remains to evaluate these as well. Quite often, a physician will be more than happy to take additional time with a patient if they have asked in advance.

4) If this is a visit to a new physician, then have your complete health history at your fingertips. After all, it is within your rights, as a patient, to have access to all of your medical records. This includes a list of your medications (with dosages, and changes over time), allergies, previous medical/health problems and surgeries, smoking/alcohol/drug use history, and family history. It should also include the results to previous diagnostic procedures, like lab results, imaging studies (X-Rays, CT scans, MRIs, etc.), mammograms, colonoscopies, treadmill tests, etc.

Familiarize yourself with this information as much as possible, as well, so when asked about something you will be more than likely to know the answer. This will often speed up a doctor's visit, and help get things done, and in addition, you'll be better able to catch errors that might have been inadvertently made about your health history, medications, etc.

5) Write down any questions that you might have, and inform your physician that you have questions that you would like to have answered. Be direct with those questions, and if you don't understand the answers then tell them! Quite often, physicians will be more than willing to re-explain something, but if time becomes a constraint (which it often does), you might have to leave certain questions until the following visit, or seek out other sources of information.

6) Last, but most certainly not least important, is if something doesn't seem right, or if something just doesn't make sense to you, then never hesitate to inform your provider of your concerns. If a new medication doesn't feel like it's doing the job or if there are side-effects, or if you feel like you're not healing properly after your surgery, etc., then call your physician immediately! When in doubt, make the call, or get to an Emergency Department if necessary.

Following these simple steps can help ensure that you will get the most out of any doctor's visit, that you will use the time that is available most efficiently, and most importantly, that you will be a satisfied (and healthy!) patient.

Leptospirosis: Rat Urine and Soda Can Lids

This incident happened recently in North Texas: A woman went boating one Sunday taking with her some cans of cola which she put into the refrigerator of the boat.

On Monday she was taken to the hospital and placed in the Intensive Care Unit.

She died on Wednesday.

The autopsy concluded she died of Leptospirosis.

This was traced to the can of cola she drank from, not using a glass. Tests showed that the can was infected by dried rat urine and hence the disease Leptospirosis.

Rat urine contains toxic and deathly substances. It is highly recommended to thoroughly wash the upper part of soda cans before drinking out of them.

The cans are typically stocked in warehouses and transported straight to the shops without being cleaned.

A study at NYCU showed that the tops of soda cans are more contaminated than public toilets (i.e.).. full of germs and bacteria. So wash them with water before putting them to the mouth to avoid any kind of fatal accident.

Illness usually begins abruptly with fever and other symptoms.

Leptospirosis may occur in two phases; after the first phase, with fever, chills, headache, muscle aches, vomiting, or diarrhea, the patient may recover for a time but become ill again. If a second phase occurs, it is more severe; the person may have kidney or liver failure or meningitis. This phase is also called Weil's disease.

The illness lasts from a few days to 3 weeks or longer. Without treatment, recovery may take several months.

From what I read, the sudden death of the women is surprising but different people have different reactions to disease. Death is not all that common.

The disease is caused by bacteria. It is easily treated if diagnosed properly. Rural people and veterinarians are subject to the disease. Water contaminated with rodent urine can cause the disease. Farmers, fish workers, and others working in a contaminated environment should wear protective foot ware.
